E-COMMERCE/RETAIL > Frontgate (QVC Group)

Below is a tiny sampling of the thousands of product descriptions I wrote at Frontgate.

I was originally a contract freelance Proofreader for Frontgate when I applied for an open Copywriter position. I was soon hired as a full-time Proofreader/Copywriter and dropped the "Proofreader" part of the title (although that responsibility never completely went away) when the copy demands grew and it became too difficult to do both. I wrote thousands of product descriptions for web and print (possibly 10,000+, but I stopped counting around 8k), hundreds of editorial hedlines and subheds, dozens of blogs and guides and who-knows-how-many other marketing materials (press releases, emails, postcards, product names, etc.). I wrote two versions of copy for each product: one for the site, and another much shorter version for the catalog. I also wrote print and web copy for each collection as well as for each piece in the collection.

While at Frontgate I also spearheaded a copy CMS initiative (and wrote a script to convert tens of thousands of diverse legacy docs into a common importable format), managed multiple freelancers and their copy (from assignment to final production), created the company's first web copy style guide and rewrote the existing print copy style guide and won a company award. There were so many pillows ... so ... very ... many ... pillows ... I also wrote dozens of internal "How To" docs and a humorous, thematic Out of Office message each time I took PTO (many people would email me when I was out just to get my OOO message).

BTW: the "We're sorry - this item was so popular, it sold out." line you'll still see online for the sold-out products ... I wrote that, too.
